AquaSEEN™ Efficacy in Eliminating Legionella and Pseudomonas Contamination in Water Treatment Units

Introduction:

AquaSEEN™ is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that eliminates 99.999% of harmful bacteria, viruses, molds, and yeasts (wild strains). It can be safely used in concentrated form across a wide range of applications requiring total disinfection. AquaSEEN™ is the ideal solution to address the unique challenges faced by water treatment units.

AquaSEEN has gained approval from the Jordanian Ministry of Health for Drinking Water Disinfection Application. As well as, AquaSEEN's technology has received approval and garnered recognition under the EU Commission Implementing Regulation 2021/347, dated 25 February 2021. This regulation endorses hypochlorous acid as an approved active substance for use in biocidal products classified under product type 5 (Water Disinfection).

Objective:

To evaluate the efficacy of AquaSEEN WaterSEEN in disinfecting the facility’s water supply, with a specific focus on the elimination of Legionella and Pseudomonas bacteria. This trial was conducted in 2024 by a Swedish facility located in Jordan, on its Water Treatment Unit.

Methodology:

Disinfection Methodology:

For Water System Disinfection:

Ensuring the elimination of existing microorganisms in the water lines, including biofilms.

  • 13.5 (AquaSEEN WaterSEEN Disinfectant 30L), fully concentrated (500 ppm), was added to the well (80 m³) filled with water. The flushing process has been conducted in a manner that ensures complete disinfection of the entire water treatment network.
  • The next step involved adding 2 (AquaSEEN WaterSEEN Disinfectant 30L) to the R/O water tank.
  • The facility has 7 water-using points, and each point was flushed for 4–10 minutes.

For Regular Water Disinfection:

  • An online dosing pump was implemented, following a ratio of 1:500, on the water flow going to the water-using points of the drinking and food processing network.

Testing Methodology:

  • Several samples were taken from 7 points within the facility’s water network, along with 3 samples from the water treatment unit, and 1 sample from the well.
  • The water samples were sent to a laboratory for testing for Pseudomonas, Legionella, and E. coli after using AquaSEEN WaterSEEN disinfectant in the facility’s water pipeline network.

Results:

All 11 samples that were tested in the laboratory, including:

  • 7 samples from the drinking water and food processing points within the facility’s water network.
  • 3 samples from the water treatment unit (Softener, Carbon Filter, and R/O Tank).
  • and 1 sample from the well.

Gave positive outcomes with a NO growth microbial load.

Conclusion:

Through testing and analysis, the results of this case study demonstrated the significant advantages of using AquaSEEN WaterSEEN for water treatment and disinfection, including:

  • AquaSEEN WaterSEEN eliminates the microbial load in water and water treatment units.
  • AquaSEEN WaterSEEN shows its efficacy in eliminating Legionella and Pseudomonas.
  • AquaSEEN WaterSEEN assists in preventing bacterial regrowth, as confirmed by a follow-up test conducted two weeks after the disinfection process. The microorganisms cannot build up resistance against AquaSEEN.
  • This trial confirmed that AquaSEEN WaterSEEN is an ideal and cost-effective alternative to traditional treatment processes commonly used for water disinfection.
